3ds Max Design Visual Storytelling Survey for Engineers

This short survey is only for those who have used, are using or want to use 3ds Max or 3ds Max Design for purposes *other* than entertainment production (film, TV, games). If you are in entertainment production, then you will have to wait until we develop a survey specific for those needs.

In many cases, the users we’re seeking will work with CAD data or work in places where CAD products are used. We're trying to understand what problems you face in this process and what could be done to improve things. You don’t have to be a visualization expert to answer this survey, we’re interested in knowing if there are problems we could solve that would encourage you to use 3ds Max or 3ds Max Design more in your projects.

Some of users work on a range of industries, including entertainment. If you spend more than 25% of your time working with non-entertainment productions, then please fill out the survey.

We're going to ask you about 10 questions about your work/role and then no more than 3-4 questions about what things we could improve. Shouldn't take more than a few minutes of your time. Thanks in advance for contributing.

Follow the link for the survey:

Removing the Car Park Reflection Image from Polished Chrome Materials in Inventor

When you have a part with a polished chrome reflection these normally displays and image of a car park, or a man sitting on a Motorbike.

In the following screen shots of the space mouse you will see the difference between a reflected and non-reflected material finish.

1. Reflecting Chrome material displaying car park reflection.

2. Reflecting Chrome material displaying no car park reflection.

3. This is done by going into Inventor and Selecting on the Tools Ribbon Tab> Application Options> Colours Tab> Reflection Environment and selecting browse next to ParkingLot.dds.

4. Now open/select the Chrome.dds.  This will now permanently display all reflections a standard chrome, without displaying the car park image.

Congratulations to UK based Ellis Furniture who were voted as 2012 Inventor of Year

Customers with a wide variety of tastes, from luxury hotels to government institutions, have relied on U.K.-based Ellis Furniture for their high-quality furniture needs for over a century. Due to the company’s ongoing high standard for quality customized furniture and continued dedication to new and innovative technology, the Autodesk Manufacturing community has recognized Ellis as the 2012 Inventor of the Year.
Ellis was chosen the 2012 Inventor of the Year after a month-long voting process throughout February. The competition, which set the record this year for the highest number of participating votes, included all 2012 Autodesk Inventor of the Month recipients — each of which rose to the challenge to develop the most innovative design and engineering advancements with standout products that achieved a practical need.

The Autodesk Inventor of the Month program identifies the most innovative among hundreds of thousands of designers and engineers that invent with Autodesk Digital Prototyping tools. Last year’s recipients leveraged a variety of Autodesk solutions, including Autodesk Product Design Suite, Autodesk Factory Design Suite, the Autodesk Simulation software portfolio and Autodesk PLM 360.

Ellis, Autodesk’s August 2012 Inventor of the Month, uses Autodesk Inventor software as part of Autodesk Product Design Suite to offer customers greater levels of product customization and to cut time from the company’s manufacturing process by 80 percent. This time-savings and increased design speed enables Ellis to rapidly explore a number of options for its customers, creating quality custom furniture that fits each customer’s precise needs and is built to last a lifetime.

Request the features you want with Ideastation

Its the age old question, "When are we going to get this feature....why hasn't that been put into this product.." and the common response I give is "Well have you asked for it?" and usually the answer is no. Although in all fairness it's never really been that obvious how it can be done.

My answer used to be "Please log your request using the product feedback page" (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=1109794).

This is one area that Autodesk Product Managers keep tabs but in all fairness wasn't the easiest page to find.

If you 're a user of the Autodesk forums you may of noticed a change of late, which is the addition of IdeaStations. So you now have a relatively interactive way to log new feature requests. If an idea gets picked up for scoping then you'll see the status change from New Idea to Under Review, Accepted and so more depending on how succesful the request is.
